My stepmother put my half-sister on the pill long before she was sexually active because growing up poor, step-mom had seen plenty of kids' lives ruined by teen pregnancy. This did not apply to my sister, who was not raised poor and was in no way a candidate for teen pregnancy. Step-mom also kept a neurotic watch over her when at home, afraid a stranger would break into the house at night and kidnap her. Unreasonable fears ruled the day in this case, and I would imagine, though have no empirical evidence, that helicopter parents have the same forces in play,
