I remember being deployed and being slightly terrified for the first few days that I could die any second. Then I developed a sort of ambivalence to death. I accepted that it was a natural thing in war and it may happen to me but thinking about it would hinder my ability to function effectively. It still hurt to lose fellow soldiers but it was fleeting only to return years later. I nearly did die though,as close as you come. The lowest on the coma scale without dying. I still now don't fear death like I did before my combat experience even with my health having returned to a nominal level. A slightly different take on the article's premise.
