I would say is what people fear most. If pain is managed properly, then they may retain the mental capacity to enjoy whatever life is left.
Unrelenting, excruciating and terminal pain however, is an entirely other matter. It keeps the person a prisoner, hijackers their mental capabilities, and inflicts gruesome torture on it's victims. It drains the life out of them, and the only thing they can think of it the burden of pain they are carrying. It is horrifying to watch, and again, with proper pain management, perhaps the fears and anxieties can be lessened. I saw this with my own Mother, and once she was properly administered appropriate pain meds, she could relax and accept her fate.
