Personality can have all the positive effects in the world, but you said it yourself--it doesn't do much initially. You don't win any first dates or even first conversations with personality if the looks aren't there.
The initial condition is extremely important. If you don't have it, you can't even start, and if you can't start, you can't get anywhere.
