I think the greatest challenge to teaching empathy is that these young men often don't come from an environment where there is no empathy for them. To a degree, they are victims of their upbringings and if they get no empathy, they're likely not to develop empathy for others.
The mean streets simply don't care about them, so why should they care about others.
