Many of the comments and beliefs about the efficacy of abstinence only or harm-reduction programs highlight the complexity of addiction and lack of a one-size-fits all solution. Not having had personal contact with Amy Winehouse, I am cautious about jumping to conclusions, though her portrayal in the media suggests that she struggled with co-occurring mental health and drug and alcohol problems. Regardless of how wonderful any particular treatment program is, one of the strongest contributing factor to success is the patient/client's readiness to change his/her behaviors. Even when readiness is present, however, the overbearing pull of mental illness and addiction can overwhelm these desires. The death of Amy Winehouse represents the devastation that mental illness and drugs and alcohol can cause.
