Great article, Mr. Goleman! As a formerly shy individual, I can attest to your analysis. At the age of 12, I realized how much I despised my shyness and decided to act upon it. I did exactly what those parents did - exposed myself to rather strange situations knowing that I was likely to humiliate myself. I took up an outseide sales job and confronted my inner fears. Not only did I learn so much about myself but I also began to love myself. I still find it challenging to voice my ideas in a group situation but the important thing is that I know how to annihilate my anxiety just like I always have. And, if I still find myself to be frightened, I seek inspiration from self-proclaimed shy leaders such as Sir Richard Branson. Leaders are, indeed, made, not born!
