This "cultural notion" you refer to is suggestive. Does our culture engender clinical narcissism? I wonder. Media is ubiquitous. It's impact cannot be denied, particularly amongst kids. No wonder they all want fame and recognition at any and all cost. Even kids brought up in normal, well adjusted families fall prey to the need for external validation. It's all notches in one's belt. I did this. I did that. Line item after line item. People want to know who you are based on what you've accomplished. And if they deem it inconsequential in the context of popular culture, you're nobody.Believe me, as a photographer and writer in and out of Hollywood, I can tell you that people of "substance" are the ones you already know. Everyone else is just "flyover."
